Singer and songwriter Alice Howe is a rising voice in American Roots music. With her soulful, impeccably tuned vocals and crafted poetry, Alice has been marked as one to watch since the release of her 2017 EP You’ve Been Away So Long. To hear Alice Howe sing is to be enraptured by the natural, unaffected beauty of her voice. There’s no artifice, no histrionics — just honest, authentic, emotionally resonant singing in the tradition of the roots music that shaped her. In 2019, Alice released Visions. Produced by Freebo, it is a modern love letter to 60’s and 70’s folk and timeless blues. Her newest album, Circumstance, recorded in Muscle Shoals, is a collection of new original songs produced and arranged by Freebo and backed by a world-class band.

Freebo is a folk, rock and blues icon who first came to national prominence as Bonnie Raitt’s bass player for 10 years beginning in 1971. For over 30 years, he played bass on classic recordings and toured with some of the great artists of our time including John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers; CSN; Maria Muldaur; Ringo Starr; Michelle Shocked, Neil Young; Loudon Wainwright III; Dr. John, and many others. He has also appeared on Saturday Night Live, Midnight Special, Muppets Tonight, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap. Not willing to rest on those achievements, Freebo delved more deeply into his creativity and has become a highly regarded singer/songwriter, now working on his 6th full-length solo CD. A multi award winner and finalist in numerous songwriting contests, Freebo was also recognized as the ‘Best Folk Artist 2007’ by the Los Angeles Music Awards. In addition, he has appeared on Saturday Night Live, The Muppet Show, The Midnight Special, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap. His compassionate concern for the world and people around him, as evidenced both in his lyrics and his open stage banter, has helped him connect with listeners worldwide.

Alice Howe knew. There she was, recording at the legendary Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, standing on ground soaked in soul, and she knew the truth.

She had to dig deeper than ever before.

Her voice had carried her this far in folk circles, but now she needed to tap into the spirits of the musical titans pictured in photos on the walls. They called to her, demanding nothing less.

“There is so much history there, and I did feel like there was a certain amount of pressure to deliver and be a singer,” she recalls. “I’m in this room with Aretha Franklin and Etta James looking down on me, and it’s like that Mona Lisa thing where the eyes follow you around the room and you’re like: ‘Hi, ladies!’ Those are singers with a capital S.”

Channeling Fame’s ghosts, she mined her heart, poured everything into her vocals, and created her second and latest album, Circumstance — 11 stirring tracks that pull no punches weaving together a vibrant tapestry of southern rock, country, folk, classic soul and blues. As an old soul inside a 30-something millennial, Alice put her stamp on American music’s timeless strands with standout originals evoking both classic singer-songwriters and the sounds that once filled airwaves, roadhouses and juke joints with desire and heartbreak.

“This album tells a story of coming back to myself, and to my power,” she says.

The dynamic between Howe and Freebo is seamless… Freebo’s bass work was always interesting and unexpected, while Howe contributed well-controlled vocals that shined over the top of every song, paired with her melodic guitar lines. —
